Workshop Summary
Explore how the early railways developed in the North East and how significant George Stephenson was to this development. Pupils will visit the museum to look at one of George Stephenson’s earliest engines, Killingworth Billy and discover more about the story of George and Robert Stephenson. They will also explore other engines in our museum so that they can see how the design technology of engines has changed over time. They will then find out how coal was transported to coal mines before steam locomotives were introduced. They will finish off by working in groups to create their own mini exhibition by analysing and evaluating a range of historical sources including objects, photographic and written evidence.
