Take a four mile return trip following the route of the coal trains from the collieries to the River Tyne behind a vintage locomotive in our 1950s passenger carriages.

In 2019, we were delighted to announce the return to service of steam locomotive 401. Known in a previous life as Vulcan, and more recently as Thomas Burt MP, 401 was restored by our dedicated team of volunteers over a six year period.

We are hoping to operate 401 throughout the running season, but occasionally the locomotive may need to take the day off. If you'd like to know which engine is running on the day, please call the Museum in advance on (0191) 277 7135.

Please note that heritage train rides are subject to the availability of volunteer crew.
